As a result of development of their existing premises at Brunel University campus the renowned Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance relocated to new premises on a nearby site in Twickenham. The property consisted of a new-built performance dance studio and associated welfare and hygiene facilities, integration of new basement level and ground level dance studios adjacent to the existing listed administration building, and the conversion of an adjacent chapel to provide two additional studios.

The challenges, particularly in the converted areas was to control the atmosphere in what are extremely physical activity areas, whilst allowing for varied uses at different times in the curriculum.

Particular attention was given to concealing the services, particularly heating and ventilation, to avoid wall clutter, which would detract from the teaching and training requirements.

All studio spaces required flexible user-friendly pre-programmed environmental controls to allow teaching staff to select the appropriate environment for the type of activity being undertaken. The main performance studio was required to deal with a full-house during the regular performances, but allow less-demanding conditions during routine teaching sessions.
